Hand lettering and Typography

I’ve always loved typography, big bouncy fonts, especially those with a hand-lettered swash. So I created this design for York College, my alma mater, inspired by a class I took with Ken Barber.

Here’s a snapshot of my process from marker to vector.

A few things Ken Barber taught us that stick with me today:

You only really need to make a few letterforms to build an entire alphabet.

Start in pencil and use tracing paper.

Draw the forms over and over again until you get it right, don’t be afraid to pick and choose letters.
